Breastfeeding Peer Support in Wakefield

We are excited that Families and Babies (FAB) has been commissioned by Wakefield Council to deliver the Breastfeeding Promotion and Community Peer Support Service, supporting new families to enjoy their breastfeeding journeys and helping to normalise breastfeeding across the district.

FAB is also commissioned by Mid Yorks NHS Trust to support breastfeeding on the postnatal wards at Pinderfields Hospital helping to get breastfeeding off to a great start.

The FAB Wakefield team are based inside The Ridings Shopping Centre. We are on the Upper Mall, Unit 95. We are happy to be a drop-in comfy space to breastfeed while you are out and about, and if you need one-to-one support, you can make an appointment to see a peer supporter by ringing our 24-hour helpline on 01924 851901. See you soon 🙂

What FAB Wakefield offers

  • Antenatal Support We offer many types of antenatal support here at FAB, including face-to-face group sessions, one-to-one sessions, an online antenatal course, and more! Click the link here for more details on what we offer!
  • Support in Hospital We are present on the postnatal wards at Pinderfields between 9am and 3pm, 7 days a week. We can support with positioning, hand expression, and the early days of breastfeeding.
  • One to One Support FAB supports breastfeeding mums in their local community by offering one-to-one support for all mums resident in Wakefield.  Once discharged from the ward, or after a home birth, mums can expect contact via telephone to discuss their breastfeeding and to offer a home visit, if required. Mums can also expect weekly telephone contact up to six weeks, and additional visits if necessary.
  • 24-Hour Helpline 01924 851 901 The helpline is available for all mums and is staffed on a voluntary basis by experienced peer supporters. The line is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We are here to help with any breastfeeding concerns, big or small.
  • FAB Facebook Group We have a closed group on Facebook where new parents can chat and support each other through their breastfeeding journey. Our virtual peer supporter, Annie Milk, can offer support and answer questions, and you will also find links to useful information. Search FAB Wakefield breastfeeding support on Facebook
  • Breastfeeding Support Groups Weekly support groups run in the community where you can join other mums and speak to a breastfeeding peer supporter. We have a good relationship with Family Hubs and we often work alongside midwives and health visitors to offer support at the same time and location. In return we can give information about local Family Hubs so families can make use of their services, such as baby clinics, baby massage classes, and the many parent and toddler groups. You can find information on local Family Hubs at Wakefield Families Together. Our groups are listed below.
  • Working For Us Volunteering opportunities are available in all capacities to support Families and Babies.  If you would like to support others in your community with their breastfeeding experiences, please contact us via our helpline on 01924 851901 or email wakefieldadmin@familiesandbabies.org.uk. You will gain experience, knowledge and be offered accredited training, all of which are stepping stones for when employment positions become available or when you choose to move on in life.
  • Breast Pump Loan Scheme We also hold small number of breast pumps, which are available for short-term loan by referral only. If the person who is supporting you with your breastfeeding thinks that you may need one, they can access the Wakefield Breast Pump Loan Scheme by calling our helpline number 01924 851901

If you require breastfeeding support, please call our 24-hour breastfeeding helpline 01924 851901 to speak to a peer supporter for help over the telephone, to find your nearest breastfeeding group, or arrange an appointment at FAB or a home visit.
